Meet the SCP Team: Will Sexton, Communications Manager

As we celebrate our five-year anniversary this month, we’re taking time to lift up the members of our talented team and the work they’re doing in and with our community!

Next up in our series is William Sexton (aka Will), Communications Manager at Strategic Community Partners. As a lifelong Detroiter, William is deeply committed to ensuring the city’s resurgence is equitable and inclusive of all communities. In his current role, he is responsible for developing SCP’s communication strategies while also working collaboratively with the organization’s partners to promote and advance their missions. 

Prior to joining SCP, Will served as a Communications Fellow with the Skillman Foundation, where he helped to share, market, and grow the Foundations' impact through digital and print platforms. 

William is a proud graduate of the University of Michigan, where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration and a minor in Afro-American and African studies. Outside of work, he is also an avid runner, passionate sneaker enthusiast, and two-time fantasy football league champion.

In one sentence, how do you describe your work with SCP?

I help develop our brand while also helping to share the work and missions of our partners.

What are some of your favorite projects you've worked on at SCP and why?

I've really enjoyed our work with the Grow Detroit's Young Talent program. As someone who grew up in Detroit during a time when opportunities for youth were limited, especially during the summer, it's inspiring to see how much GDYT has grown in the last few years. Being able to help launch this year's initiative and tell the story of GDYT has been exciting to be a part of. 

What inspires you?

I'm always inspired by new challenges and finding ways to solve them. With communications and marketing, there's always an opportunity to do something in a unique way, connect with someone new or find a different solution to an old problem. 

What is your favorite thing about Detroit?

My favorite thing about Detroit is the creativity that can be found throughout the city. For decades Detroit has produced some of the most creative and influential leaders in music, sports, business, community activism and so much more. No matter the field or the challenge, Detroiters will always figure out a way to excel. 

What is your favorite quote and why?

A quote that really resonates with me is "Detroit is big enough to matter in the world but small enough for you to matter in it." I think this gets at the crux of living in a place like Detroit. You can get that big city feel of Chicago and New York, while still having opportunities to make an impact in your community.
