SPEAKER
Burnell Holland is currently deputy director of the My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Alliance, an initiative of the Obama Foundation. MBK Alliance was born out of President Obama’s call to action to ensure all of our nation’s boys and young men of color have equal opportunity to achieve their full potential. In this role, he is primarily responsible for managing the development and implementation of the MBK Community Challenge Competition, a national grant competition focused on community investment in the areas of youth violence reduction and effective mentoring practices. The MBK Community Challenge Competition anchors the MBK Alliance’s place-based strategy to accelerate impact in targeted communities throughout the United States.
Prior to his transition to the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, Burnell served as Chief of Staff in the DC Public Schools Office of Innovation and Research. In this role, one of his major tasks included the day-to-day management of the district’s EmpoweringMales of Color initiative, a bold effort by Mayor Muriel Bowser, and former Chancellor Kaya Henderson to improve educational and life outcomes for African American and Latino males within DCPS. Burnell also spent several years working in the district’s Office of Family and Public Engagement.
Burnell holds a Bachelor’s degree from Boston College, a Master of Public Administration degree from Syracuse University’sMaxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, and an Executive Master’s in leadership from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University.
