Kenya Abbott Jr. is a native of Detroit, Michigan. Kenya attended Cass Technical High School, one of the leading high schools in Detroit and Michigan State University, where she graduated in 2015 with two bachelor's degrees in Journalism and Sociology and a specialization in African American and African Studies. She also graduated from University of Detroit Mercy's master of community development program in 2019, with an emphasis on human and economic development. Kenya currently works at United Way for Southeastern Michigan as the Program Director for the Community Schools Initiative.

Outside of work, Kenya is the founder of KenShip an organization focused on community development and youth development, host of a podcast called "PoliticKen" and creative of Kentertainment. As an artist she goes by the name, Detroit Redd. She released her first EP in summer of 2019 entitled "Critically ThinKen". She also released her first poem book entitled, "28” in Summer 2020. She has grown to love and believe most in her ability to uniquely connect people for unified problem solving. Too often, problem solving across diverse perspectives is deemed as too challenging or even impossible. She is determined to reverse that mindset and share her experiences along the way.
