Adam Layne is an education advocate who has been driving toward educational equity and excellence in the city of St. Louis since he began his professional career. In 2011, he joined Teach For America, teaching Algebra and Trigonometry to students at Career Academy on North Grand. In 2014, he joined InspireSTL, an education access and support nonprofit serving students in the city of St. Louis. While there, he was responsible for developing curriculum around academic coaching, mentorship, leadership, and college access specifically tailored to ensure first-generation students of color were prepared for the academic rigors of high school and that they had the support necessary to graduate on time, receive acceptances to 4-year colleges and universities, and persist at their institution of higher education. In 2016, he was named Director and during his tenure, 100% of students graduated on time from high school with an over 90% college persistence rate.
Adam considers himself an activist, passionate about topics of race and equity as well as the necessary education that come with those topics. He has created and facilitated diversity, equity, and inclusion training within predominantly white private and parochial schools to address bias, culturally responsive curriculum, and inclusive education policies. Adam has his heart in writing curriculum for and developing youth programming and is currently working on youth programming initiatives across St. Louis. Adam took a step further in his activism and involvement in 2019 by being elected to the Board of Education for the city of St. Louis. A native of Boston, Massachusetts, Adam received his bachelor’s degree in finance from George Washington University in Washington, DC, and his master’s degree from UMSL in secondary education.
