Robert Simmons
Senior Equity Consultant

Robert Simmons, EdD serves as the Senior Equity Advisor for Strategic Community Partners. He also holds a role as an adjunct professorial lecturer at American University where he helped lead the development of the Summer Institute on Education, Equity and Justice. Additionally, Robert is a member of the education and equity collaborative EdChange.

Robert has lectured and delivered workshops throughout the United States and Europe, and has been asked to comment on racial equity and a variety of education issues on national media outlets including CNN, as well as local media outlets in Baltimore, Detroit, Los Angeles and Washington DC.

During his career as an educator, Robert has served in senior leadership roles at the See Forever Foundation, Campaign for Black Male Achievement and the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS). While at DCPS, Robert was the chief architect of racial equity efforts focused on improving the academic outcomes for students of color but also changing systemic policies and practices. Prior to joining DCPS, Dr. Simmons was the founding director of the Center for Innovation in Urban Education and Institute for Urban Catholic Education at Loyola University Maryland. As an associate professor of urban education and African American Studies, and second African American man to ever be granted tenure at Loyola, Robert served as a research associate at the Baltimore Education Research Consortium at Johns Hopkins University. 

Robert has authored over 50 publications, including serving as a contributing author to the highly recognized Promise of Place report for the Campaign for Black Male Achievement. His next book, Interrupting the School to Prison Pipeline: African American Males as Critical Scholars and Intellectuals, is part autobiographical reflecting on his fathers' incarceration while offering insights into the educational experiences of African American males.

Robert has been a fellow with the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Foundation and the Fulbright Memorial Fund. Currently, Robert serves as the national chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion advisory board for FIRST Lego Robotics, a board member for Black Girls Code, and on the leadership council for Echoing Green's Black Male Achievement fellowship. Selected for an Outstanding Alumni Award at Western Michigan University and the BE Modern Man Award from Black Enterprise, Robert has dedicated over 20 years of his professional life to supporting young people, their families and the community.
